The institution code (IK) is a unique identifier for the billing with the institutions of social insurance. Contracting parties providing services within the scope of medical and vocational rehabilitation, receive an institution code. The allocation and use of the IK has been agreed in February 1979 by the Umbrella organizations of the institutions of social insurance. Because the positive experience the IK was included in the social code and has been used since 1.1.1989 as official mark of suppliers and service providers in the correspondence and for billing purposes (§ 293 SGB V).
The IK consists of exactly 9 digits.
