  • SOAP - Simple Object Access Protocol

    General

SOAP is a protocol for communication between distributed applications. SOAP defines a format based on the XML standard for representing the data of a SOAP message. This message is sent as a request to the server (usually over HTTP but also FTP and SMTP), which responds with a SOAP-encoded message. Thus, SOAP allows a very flexible network communication, which is similar in to remote procedure call (RPC), but in addition its flexibility has the advantage to be able to encapsulate multiple operations in transactions. Naturally, due to the XML-base, a SOAP message is far more data-intensive as for example RPC.

Since version 1.2, 'SOAP' is no longer an acronym for 'Simple Object Access Protocol' but is instead an independent name.
